2.2 Algorithms of Oppression

gracynholiway

The quote "if the majority rules in search engine results, then how might those who are in the minority ever be able to influence or control the way they are represented in a search engine?" raises important questions about the role of algorithms in shaping our online experiences. Google search results are determined by a complicated set of algorithms that take into account factors like relevance, popularity, and quality. This means that websites and content that are deemed more relevant and popular by these algorithms are more likely to appear at the top of search results. However, this also means that those who are in the minority may struggle to be represented fairly in search results. As it was pointed out later on, for the writer, there were pornographic results as shown in the photo attached. The unregulated internet only worsens this issue. With no clear guidelines or standards for what establishes good content or how search algorithms should function, it can be difficult for those in the minority to have a say in how they are represented online. This is especially true for marginalized communities who may face systemic biases and discrimination in the real world, which can also be reflected in the online space. Ultimately, the issue of representation in search engine results is elaborate and complicated. It requires a coordinated effort from all contributors, including search engines, content creators, and users, to ensure that the internet remains an open and inclusive space for everyone.
