The quote "The adoption of critical race theory as a stance in the field would mean examining the beliefs about the neutrality and objectivity of the entire field of LIS and moving toward understanding racist classification and knowledge management practices. Such a stance would be a major contribution that could have impact on the development of new approaches to organizing and accessing knowledge about marginalized groups" highlights an important piece of this reading. CRT, pictured above, is a theoretical framework that explores how race intersects with social and political power structures, and how these structures produce and perpetuate systemic racism. The adoption of CRT as a stance in LIS would mean examining the beliefs about the neutrality and objectivity of the field, and recognizing how these beliefs have contributed to the production and perpetuation of racist classification and knowledge management practices.Classification systems are a fundamental aspect of LIS, and they play a critical role in organizing and accessing knowledge. However, classification systems are not neutral or objective. They are shaped by social and political power structures, and they often reflect and perpetuate biases and hegemonic worldviews. For example, classification systems have historically marginalized and erased the knowledge and experiences of non-white, non-Western, and non-male communities. The adoption of CRT as a stance in LIS would mean critically examining classification systems and recognizing the biases and hegemonic worldviews that are embedded within them. This could involve rethinking the ways in which knowledge is categorized and organized, and developing new approaches that center the knowledge and experiences of marginalized communities. By recognizing the limitations and biases of existing classification systems, and working towards more inclusive and equitable approaches to knowledge management, LIS professionals can contribute to the creation of a more just and equitable society.
